Ubuntu 9.10

My first impressions of the latest and greatest release of Ubuntu 9.10 or Karmic Koala...

Loved the feel. The new icons and themes are the best so far since I first started using Ubuntu.
Start up is a breeze. Still, nothing is impossible
you can make it even faster. [Follow these tips]
Browsing in Firefox is considerably faster. Tabs are enabled by default.
You can manage start-up items this time using "Upstart" including their sequence.
The blinks and glitches during boot are gone.
I know how hard it is to upgrade your 9.04 from Ethiopia or download this release of Ubuntu specially now since everyone is trying to do the same. So please pm me for a free CD and only that
To install multimedia support and flash, you'll need to enter the following command in the Terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras

I've only played around with Ubuntu in a virtual machine, I've never used it as a primary OS. 9.10 looks allright, I haven't really dug into it yet
Thanks for the tips Cyano. I
Thanks for the tips Cyano. I am liking it. The hundred paper cuts project must have done a good job. Here are a few nice things i noticed
* File operations are now visible on the notification area
* You can mount ISO files as drives automatically by simply double clicking on them (really cool especially if you have tried the command line approach)
* The Add/Remove programs application is replaced with the cooler Ubuntu Software Center
* You can now format flash drives by right clicking on them and choosing format. Really great!
* Right clicking on a flash drive now provides the "Safely Remove Hardware" option which is much better than the cryptic "unmount" and ambiguous "Eject" options.
btw, I stumbled upon a great piece of usability software. It is gnome-do. It provides you with an easy access to your files and programs and it can also act like a dockbar (like in a Mac).
.... really?

I am using it now (thanks to Toms) and I like it a lot
Here is an in-depth review

UBUNTU issues if u r using
UBUNTU issues
if u r using linux, especially ubuntu you will face problems with the 'ZTE modems' etc tells u to buy. i found this info useful - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1320700&highlight=zte
i have few reservations with 9.10s' performance with small machines - like the pentium M, and older machines. The screen resolution and touchpad issues seem to be poping here and there, I think i will stay with the stable version for now.
one thing i didnt quiet get find or hear much about is ext4 - how is that workin out for u guys?
In the interests of clarity, it seemed necessary to constantly remind myself to pay not the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation; I adhered conscientiously to the rule of the brilliant theoretician, Ludwig Boltzmann, to leave elegance to tailors and shoemakers. Einstein
I have been using ext4 since
I have been using ext4 since it was in beta. The great thing about it and the most obvious is that you don't see the data recovery screen every time you boot after a crash or power outages. A friend using ext4 'journaling' system on 9.04 had her grub loader failed after a power outage on her laptop with a weak battery. I am still testing it on 9.10 but I don't recommend using it yet on 9.04 or earlier versions.

Ext3 was forked to ext4 not
Ext3 was forked to ext4 not to disturb the stability of ext3 and its current users. Ext4 has various improvements over ext3 as one would expect from a more modern filesystem.
Wikipedia mentions a lot of advantages and one disadvantage.
I so far have had no problems with Karmic either on new (Dell Optiplex 760) or "small"(Toshiba laptop with Pentium M processor) hardware. I have always had ACPI issues with my laptop, even before Karmic and that's it.
Compiz always gave me trouble with screen resolutions, especially when plugging a projector to my laptop. Earlier I used to fiddle with the xorg.conf file to fix that. Now, I can't seem to find xorg.conf anywhere so I just disable Compiz before plugging the projector.
.... really?
