Why is there a big media attention to the swine flu if the mortality rate of the swine flu is less than the mortality rate of the seasonal flu or the common cold?

There are a total of 166 confirmed deaths, and 29,392 confirmed cases: that's a mortality rate under 1%. The media blows things out of proportion.

Thanks to the media, I am finally freaking out hehe. There are reported cases in our country and people have been quarantined in paulos hospital. The third time that this has been reported if I am not mistaken.
