Google Chrome OS

Here is a snip from google's official blog about their first operating system to be released soon...

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

It all sounds great, as much as they tried to cover it, you can sense the attempt to destroy Microsoft for good. I did not like their Chrome browser and I have stopped using it, I hope these "Operating System" (although I don't think it matches the definition to begin with) "just work" for me Smiling

When Google released their

When Google released their Chrome browser, there were some reviewers that predicted that it was yet another attempt to oust Microsoft. One of the reviews I read predicted that Google are in essence providing a strong platform for web applications. It hinted that since everything these days is moving into 'the cloud', Google are betting that we will not need today's bloated operating systems in the near future. I guess Google made the next logical move - a non-bloated OS to run your browser.

It is my opinion that data and computation is moving into the cloud for the 'lucky' ones who enjoy fast internet. I have this feeling that Google's Chrome OS is a step in that direction. I will have to investigate though.

My questions are, do we need a YAOS (yet another operating system)? What about Google Android? I thought it was being prepped for netbooks.

.... really?

For some reason, Google

For some reason, Google isn't saying much about the android OS for notebooks. As for Google Chrome browser, I too didn't like it. It is not as good as Firefox. I hope this OS will rock though.
